History of 89th Bremore Scout Group
This will be brief
At the start of the Summer in 2014, Scouting Ireland put out a call in the Balbriggan area to see if there would be enough interest from the local community to start a new scout group to accommodate both boys and girls. There was a scout group in the town already, but they could not facilitate girls joining. Some initial meetings were held in local schools by the Provincial Support Team of Gerry Hickey and James Fox with the support of the Fingal County Commissioner Bernie Reddy.
By June, it was established that there was indeed enough interest from the community and a group of people got together to make some decisions about
-
what the group should be called - Bremore after the area at the North end of Balbriggan
-
what our group number should be - 89th Dublin as it was the lowest number available
-
what colour our neckerchief should be - Black for the pirates who used to frequent the area and a Turquoise border for the sea beside us
-
where we should hold our meetings - to be confirmed at that time, but some local schools were mentioned
It was our first Group Council meeting and it was held in Flemington Community Centre.
On 25th June, the first "Welcome to Scouting" course was run and 10 new scouters started their training to becoming leaders. Some had come from other local groups. Some had previous experience, and some were brand new to scouting. During the summer a Facebook Page was set up and promotional events were held to let more people in the local area know that a new scout group was being set up. Training continued over the summer to make sure that the new scouters were Garda Vetted and had completed a safeguarding course. Loreto Secondary School kindly donated a room for us to hold our forthcoming meetings in and so we were all set to welcome our new Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts in September 2014. Most new Scout Groups start with only 1 section. We had enough interest to start 3.
First Ever Scout Meeting of 89th Bremore
Our first section meeting was held for cubs on Tuesday 16th September 2014, followed by beavers and scouts on Thursday 18th September 2014.
New scouters joined the group to help out in every section. Group Council meetings were held in the Tesco Community meeting room in Millfield Shopping Centre. The group badge and flag were designed and approved.
On 30th November 2014 we held a group investiture in Loreto Secondary School where all adult and youth members were invested by the Chief Scout, Michael John Shinnick, in the presence of the Minister for Children James Reilly as well as family, friends, and members of other Fingal Scout County groups.
That is the history of how the group began. Below is a timeline of important events in the history of the group.
